Unani Tibb & Prophetic Medicine: The Sacred Science of Healing in Islam (and Its Connection to Ayurveda)

Healing in Islam is not just about treating symptoms. It is about asking Allah to return us to balance, reconnect to our fitrah (natural state), and align with the Divine order that already lives within us.

At Sufi Soul Garden, we practice a holistic model of healing rooted in Unani Tibb, Prophetic medicine, and spiritual healing traditions of the Sufi path.

In this post, I want to introduce you to the essence of Unani Tibb, how it overlaps with Ayurveda, (as this is very common in the West), and how both reflect the sacred knowledge embedded in the body and soul.

What Is Unani Tibb?

Unani Tibb, often called Greco-Arabic Medicine, is a traditional system of healing developed by early Muslim scholars like Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Al-Razi, and others. It is built upon ancient Greek teachings and deeply refined through Islamic revelation and prophetic tradition.

It focuses on:

  • Temperaments (Mizaj): Every person has a unique balance of four qualities (hot, cold, moist, and dry) which form their temperament

  • The Four Humours: Blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile

  • Balance of Elements: Health is achieved when the physical, emotional, and spiritual elements are in harmony

  • Lifestyle & Diet: Personalized recommendations for food, rest, movement, emotions, and more

  • Spiritual Connection: The healer recognizes that ultimate healing comes from Allah and we are only facilitators

What Is Prophetic Medicine?

Prophetic Medicine (Tibb Nabawi) refers to the guidance the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave regarding:

  • Herbs and healing foods (like honey, black seed, olive oil, dates)

  • Emotional balance and spiritual well-being

  • Preventative care through purification, modest living, and clean eating

  • Ruqyah (Qur’anic healing) and trusting Allah as Ash-Shafi (The Healer)

Prophetic Medicine is not “alternative” — it is a deeply integrated model of sacred care that sees the body, soul, and heart as one system.

How Is This Similar to Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, the traditional Indian healing system, shares many core principles with Unani Tibb:

  • Both are based on temperaments (or doshas in Ayurveda) known as your natural constitution

  • Both focus on digestion, lifestyle rhythms, and the relationship between food and emotion

  • Both systems see imbalances as the root of disease

  • Both view the body as a microcosm of nature

  • Both rely on natural remedies, herbs, and lifestyle correction

  • Both recognize that healing is as much spiritual as it is physical

Though rooted in different cultures and languages, these systems speak a similar sacred truth:

Your body is wise. Balance is possible. Allah placed healing in the earth and within you.

Why Does This Matter Today?

In a world where many people are over-medicated, overwhelmed, and disconnected from their own bodies systems like Unani Tibb (Prophetic Medicine) offer a return to truth, sincerity, and sacred care.

They teach us to ask:

  • What is my temperament?

  • What foods and routines nourish me?

  • What is Allah showing me through this discomfort?

  • How can I return to harmony without force?
